Hong Kong's Space Robotics and Energy Center has developed an AI-powered lunar rover for China's Chang'e-8 mission, marking another stride in Beijing's technological dominance. The humanoid robot will deploy instruments and collect samples at the Moon's south pole—a different sector than Chang'e-7's targeted landing zone.

Professor Gao Yang's team collaborated with 30 universities and space groups across Greater China and international partners. "This will be a novel demonstration of humanoid robotics on the moon by China," Gao told SCMP, underscoring national pride in the achievement.

The project aligns with China's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) prioritizing embodied AI. The country already produces 80% of global humanoid robots, aided by state-backed industrial policies. As lunar infrastructure expands, blockchain applications for space data verification—potentially involving tokens like FIL (Filecoin) or AI-focused projects—may gain traction.
